here - Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

What is a Cutting Edge Pastor?

What is a Cutting Edge Pastor?

courtesy flickr.com/dinnerseries
Someone once asked Abraham Lincoln - If you have 8 hours to chop down a tree, how would you spend your time?  His response was this, "I would spend the first 3 hours sharpening the axe."  President Lincoln knew a powerful principle about leadership - The strongest point of an axe, is the cutting edge.

What is a Cutting Edge Pastor?  Consider the following statistics about the current state of those in ministry from the Schaeffer Institute:

  • 50% of pastors feel unable to meet the demands of the job
  • 90% report that they are inadequately trained
  • 70% of pastors constantly battle depression
  • 50% are so discouraged, they would leave the ministry if they could
  • 70% do not have someone they consider to be a close friend
  • 50% of those starting out will not last 5 years
  • Only 1 out of 10 pastors will end up retiring from the ministry
This is but a small reflection of the struggles those in ministry are facing.  But, not all in ministry are like that.  So, what are the defining characteristics of a Cutting Edge Pastor?
  • A Cutting Edge Pastor is not content with being the status quo
  • They are aware that being in ministry is a battle, for which one must be equipped
  • They are willing to do whatever it takes to not lose the calling on their life
  • They are willing to do whatever it takes to not lose the family God has entrusted them with
  • They are willing to do whatever it takes to focus daily on their own relationship with God so they can minister from a place of joy
  • They are willing to help others in the ministry, and share what they are learning
  • They are passionate, God-fearing, Bible-loving, Spirit-driven, Gospel-centered flames of fire
  • Cutting Edge Pastors are ordinary people serving an extra-ordinary God
Which one are you?  You are probably facing at least 1 of the challenges reported in the top description.  You are probably here because you want to change that.  Let's encourage one another along this journey, because you have done this long enough to realize - the devil wants you to fail.

Take the following challenge - I challenge you to subscribe to this link on the right, and take the journey to start sharpening your cutting edge!

7 Steps to Prevent Burnout in Ministry

7 Steps to Prevent Burnout in Ministry

The Schaeffer institute has recently reported these following trends:
  • Only 1 out of 10 Pastors will actually retire from the ministry
  • 80% of Pastors believe that ministry has negatively affected their families in some form
  • 70% of Pastors are constantly fighting with depression
My friend, it doesn't have to be this way.  When we read of Apostle Paul in the New Testament being afflicted by a thorn in the flesh, we should not come away believing that ministry is the thorn in the flesh.  I want you to know that you can be a Pastor, and really enjoy it too.  I mean REALLY enjoy it.

Jesus told his disciples in John 15:11 - "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete."

Man!  Did you hear that Pastor?  Jesus said that He is putting HIS joy into YOU.  Do you know of any more joyful being in the Universe that Jesus himself?  And the reason he did this is so that your joy may be COMPLETE!

My prayer for you is that you will come to experience a completeness of joy in ministry.  Over the next few days, I will be writing a series about preventing burnout.  But I don't want you to think of these steps as staying away from something bad; I want you to see them as getting into something good!

So grab a cup of coffee, take a deep breath, and let's focus on the most expensive tool that God has given your church for the ministry - you.

  1. Rest Rightly - We begin our series with something everyone loves doing!  At least, I don't know anyone who doesn't love doing this... and that is sleep!! Yes!  One of the most powerful tools in your personal and spiritual arsenal is your own sleep.
  2. Declutter Daily
    1. Declutter Spirit
    2. Declutter Mind
    3. Declutter Body
  3. Withdraw Weekly
  4. Fellowship Frequently
  5. Recreate Regularly
  6. Mentor Monthly
  7. Vacate Annually
